In a world that feels more and more like quarreling and fighting, in debt to oxygen for a daily routine that is becoming more liquid every day, that loads up the cannons by talking about peace, that promises to be different in order to remain always the same, we, in our own small way, have this year claimed the right to coin a new term: "Happiness."
It is the lexical buffer-for once without fault-between Happiness & Friendship, a pair of details that are increasingly missing from the roll call in the lives of each of us. Accustomed as we are to robotize our days and scan our agendas, despite the fact that life holds on to the right to blow up traffic lights when you're in a hurry, or kick off the last train of the day a minute earlier or later, but enough to see it off.

On the one hand is happiness, which so many now confuse with cheerfulness, a state of mind that needs to be trained, cared for and kept in shape even when the world seems to resent you. On the other is friendship, fellowship, brotherhood, the deep sense of belonging to a group or community of people you choose to keep each other company during a piece of the road, whether long or short.

But Happiness is also an invitation to get out of one's 'comfort zone,' to open up and leave the house wearing something unfashionable, which is hardly used anymore: a smile plastered on one's lips. Because "life is like a mirror: it only smiles at you if you look at it smiling," as Jim Morrison was fond of repeating, to throw in a little bit of rock, too. Which never hurts.

But to top it off, it wants to be above all a manifesto and hymn dedicated to anyone with a heart willing to move ancient cobwebs made of prejudices, fears, preclusions and taboos to make it their own.

We are all here by chance, and by chance one day we will leave. But the time in between - the journey of life - does not deserve to be lived with a pout. We are an atom of eternity, and everyone is free to choose whether to live with the bitter taste of regret, or the sweet and somewhat sparkling taste of "Happiness."
